Jockey Club Age-friendly City Project Public Forum - Innovative Use of Open Space and Inclusive Built Environment

The Institute of Active Ageing (“IAA”) of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (“PolyU”) held a public forum with the theme of "Innovative Use of Open Space and Inclusive Built Environment" on 4 December 2018 at the Jockey Club Auditorium in PolyU. More than 400 participants from different sectors, including government departments, academia, social welfare sector, non-governmental organisations (“NGOs”) and the private sector, attended the forum to explore and share knowledge about age-friendly outdoor spaces and built environment in Hong Kong through presentations and discussion among speakers and panelists. Professor Daniel Lai Wing-leung, Head of Department of Applied Social Sciences and Director of IAA of PolyU and Ms Imelda Chan, Head of Charities (Grant Making – Elderly and Family) of The Hong Kong Jockey Club were the officiating guests.

Ms Imelda Chan, Head of Charities (Grant Making – Elderly and Family), The Hong Kong Jockey Club, delivered the opening remarks in the public forum.
Professor Daniel Lai shared the baseline assessment findings on outdoor spaces and buildings followed by the presentations of three keynote speakers, namely Mr K.K. Ling, Director of Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation of PolyU, Professor John Shi Wen-zhong, Head of Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics of PolyU, and Dr Lam Ching-choi, Chairman of Elderly Commission. They shared their views on the challenges and opportunities of double ageing of population and buildings, applications of smart city technologies, and policy planning on outdoor spaces and buildings respectively.
Following was the panel discussion moderated by Professor Daniel Lai to explore the ways of making public space and built environment more socially inclusive and more age-friendly for the well-being of all ages. Apart from the aforementioned keynote speakers, other panelists included Mr Ng Wing-shun Anthony Vincent, Immediate Past President of Hong Kong Institute of Architects; Dr Calvin Luk, Founding Chairman of Association for Universal Accessibility Hong Kong; Dr Cheung Moon-wah, General Manager (Elderly Services) of Hong Kong Housing Society; Ms Alice Yeung Lai-fong, Assistant Director (Architectural) of Architectural Services Department; Mr Evan Au-Yang, Board Chairman of Civic Exchange and three elderly representatives.
Exhibition and activity booths with interactive games and display boards were jointly set up by IAA of PolyU and some NGO partners to introduce the Jockey Club Age-friendly City Project and showcase the relationship between good designs of outdoor spaces and buildings and inclusive society, with a view to promoting the messages of age-friendly city to the public.

The interactive games inspired the elderly to reflect on the impact of planning and design of outdoor spaces and buildings on age-friendliness.
